Residence Qualifications for International Students

  • D-2-1(Associate Degree): International students enrolled in associate degree programs at universities or colleges recognized under the Higher Education Act or special laws.
  • D-2-2(Bachelor’s Degree): International students pursuing a bachelor’s degree or advanced specialized courses under the Higher Education Act or special laws.
  • D-2-3(Master’s Degree): International students enrolled in master’s degree programs or integrated bachelor’s and master’s degree programs as per the Higher Education Act or special laws.
  • D-2-4(Doctoral Degree): International students undertaking doctoral programs or integrated master’s and doctoral degree programs under the Higher Education Act or special laws.
  • D-2-5(Research Program): Individuals holding master’s or doctoral degrees who engage in specialized research at universities or research institutions, including activities such as experiments, practical training, and thesis preparation.
    Includes post-master’s research or post-doctoral training (regardless of field) with research allowances equivalent to living expenses.
    Students conducting research at institutions designated as specific research institutions under Article 3 of the Enforcement Decree of the Act on the Promotion of Specific Research Institutions are also eligible for D-2-5 if they are enrolled in undergraduate programs in their home country.
  • D-2-6(Exchange Students): International students participating in credit-earning exchange programs under academic exchange agreements between domestic and foreign universities
  • D-2-7(Work-Study Program): International students selected as government-sponsored scholars (e.g., GKS) or those enrolled in or intending to enroll in a formal degree program (associate or higher) at domestic universities.
    • (Government-Sponsored Scholars): Students selected under the Government Scholarship Program for International Students (GKS).
    • (Foreign Government-Sponsored Scholars): Students whose tuition fees are fully funded by their home governments.
    • (University-Selected STEM Excellence Scholars): Students selected as full-tuition scholarship recipients, either at the time of admission or during enrollment, supported entirely by university funds.

International Student Visa Application Procedure

  • Prepare all required documents for visa extension application.
  • Make an appointment at the local Immigration Office (Immigration and Foreigners Office).
  • Visit the local Immigration Office (Immigration and Foreigners Office) for document review.
    • a. If the visa extension is approved, the residence period on the back of the Alien Registration Card will be updated.
    • b. If the visa extension is denied, the applicant will be notified of follow-up actions, and must supplement the documents and reapply.

D-2 visa change procedure

When changing to a student visa (D-2) to enroll in a university, students must visit the local Immigration and Foreigners Office before the semester starts to apply for the visa change.

When extending a D-2 visa

Students who wish to extend their student visa (D-2) before the expiration of their stay must visit the local Immigration Office or Immigration and Foreigners Office to apply for the visa extension.

When extending a D-4 visa

Students of Korean language education centers who wish to extend their general training visa (D-4) before the expiration of the stay must visit the local Immigration Office or Immigration and Foreigners Office to apply for a visa extension.

Residency Management Form Information

Registration Change Report

When there are changes during study abroad, the following changes must be reported to the local Immigration Office within 14 days
(Note: Failure to report within 14 days from the date of change may result in fines.)

  • Changes in name, gender, date of birth, and nationality
  • Changes in passport number, issue date, or validity period
  • Change of school

Residence Change Report

When an international student moves during their study abroad, they must report their change of residence to the local Immigration Office, Foreigners' Office, or district community service center within 14 days. Online reporting is also possible through the Hi Korea website.
※ Failure to report the change within 14 days from the date of change may result in a fine of up to 1,000,000 KRW.
